Travis Wharton
40:30
What are the alternatives that you all are using in place of applications, reporting mechanisms, etc?
Ricshawn Roane
43:13
***SNAPS***
Angela Kan
44:37
Thank you for this conversation. I’d love to hear more about applying these principles to international grantmaking (especially where Equivalency Determination is not possible and we need to exercise Expenditure Responsibility). Thank you!
Shaady Salehi
44:41
INDEPENDENT WRITING EXERCISE (3 MIN): Can you name specific ways your foundation (or others) have perpetuated this top-down power dynamic in your work?
David Rey
45:17
Invite only.
Shaady Salehi
46:07
@Travis, many foundations have replaced traditional reports with verbal conversations, more big picture check-ins than “reporting”
Shaady Salehi
46:38
@Angela, we won’t get to this today, but I encourage you to join the TBP peer exchange listserv where you can pose some of these questions
Alexandra Hertell
47:17
I was wondering the same thing as Travis. What are examples of alternatives to the application & reporting & evaluation? If any, or is it just omitted?
Gabriela Alcalde
47:24
@Travis, at Sewall we did an alternative reporting convening which grantees liked very much--they shared with each other and we provided sessions on issues requested by grantees...this instead of written reports
Beth Tigay
48:58
@Gabriela - so interesting. I would like to learn more!
Travis Wharton
49:02
Thank you, Shaady. With the type of reporting that donors are accustomed to, we’d have to simultaneously change the donor culture/expectations as well.
Shruti Jayaraman
49:33
This was exactly Chicago Beyond's discomfort with "program officer" and reason for Growth role
Shruti Jayaraman
50:14
Thank you Lisa for describing that.

Erin Baird
51:23
GEO has an report called The Source Code of Foundation Culture that talks about origin of foundation roles and titles.
Jody Chang (she/her) - SV2
53:44
Appreciate the truth that language matters, and what we call people matters. Are there thoughts about replacements for the term “Grantee”?
Lisa Cowan
54:14
We use ‘grantee partner’ which is only marginally better
Erin Baird
54:14
We use the term grant partners.
Alexandra Hertell
54:18
Partnerships. Partners instead of grantees is a term used.
Francisco Espinoza
54:21
Love it :)
Jody Chang (she/her) - SV2
54:44
Thank you!
Claudia Leung
54:58
Interesting… we are an intermediary and we have recently been having conversations about, basically, is our role to fundraise for the grantees? How does our role differ from that of a traditional development staffer?
BA C
55:41
++++ @Carmen connecting communities of color to more resources
Soha Abdel-Razek
56:40
At GlobalGiving, we are doing phone call conversations and short surveys to check in and we are also using partners instead of the work grantees
Soha Abdel-Razek
56:58
word, rather
Julie Boudreau
58:11
We WANT to be part of- that’s what draws us to the work. Thank you thank you, Carmen for modeling how to shift from a paradigm based on separation to one based on co-creation. It’s the way into the future we want.
Claudia Leung
01:00:32
Does using terminology other than “grantee” or “program officer” obfuscate power dynamics?
BA C
01:01:51
+++ @Gabriella moving away from hierarchy to pods
Masha Chernyak
01:03:06
Love this conversation! Thank you for hosting! :) At the Latino Community Foundation, all staff are organizers and fundraisers. Every dollar we invest in community, we have raised ourselves. That changes everything. We all know how hard and lonely fundraising can be. To support our community partners, we run the Latino Nonprofit Accelerator to help give grassroots orgs access to world class branding and fundraising training. The end goal is to raise real money for our nonprofits, opening all the doors we can within philanthropy. :) https://latinocf.org/latino-nonprofit-accelerator/

01:04:43
@Masha love it!!! thank you for sharing
Stephanie Cheney
01:07:06
Has anyone analyzed the pay scales of foundation staff compared to nonprofit staff? Is there any energy for bringing balance to comparable positions?
Shaady Salehi
01:07:30
Great question @Stephanie, I’m curious about that too
Francisco Espinoza
01:07:57
@ Dimple... on point!!!! #Verdad
Meredith Soeder
01:09:01
Thanks for your insights, Dimple. Spot on! I'm also curious about the flip-side of that relationship where white-led nonprofits may not have a good understanding of the communities they serve but the program officer might through their own experiences or other grant partners. Any thoughts on that?
Meredith Soeder
01:16:32
Thank you!
Tara Westman
01:16:42
Over the years, I've often heard that our accountability to the "people of California" and being good stewards of resources lead us to monitor, ensure compliance, etc. How have you dealt with this?
Erin Switalski
01:17:40
How they have brought their Boards along in moving in this direction in their work? How have they balanced the desire from boards to show impact with this approach?
